Screenless Mobile

Do you really want a cell phone do just make calls? Have a look at this unlocked $10 GSM handset that is much better than 3G with a data access, connect books and web browsers. Even the display is not there.

The candy bar style Hop 1800 with a numeric keypad available freely in open market in U.S. It is with a speaker grill, a microphone and SIM card slot. It’s just talk and End keys (a working SIM card off AT&T, T-Mobile or prepaid will do to make calls.)
It is so easy, just dial, talk and listen and when you have finished just press the End key. It is like land line phone without the caller ID. As the Hop 1800 is without the display.
In the recent post Gina’s Pantech Breeze is easy to use “boomer” phones with a display on AT&T. Off course it is not as simple as Hop1800.

I’ve been reading along for a while now. I just wanted to drop you a comment to say keep up the good work.

This is nice but if you buy it, you need to carry with you all the numbers of your contacts…

I’ll probably buy that for my mother who barely knows how to use a phone.

ups thats why it so cheap

I personally have an old Nokia brick. Nothing special except text messages and phone calls. But the fact that is has a contact list and text messages is more than enough for me to discount this 10$ phone. Text messages are useful when people are unreachable but you need to leave them a quick message without bothering them with a phone call. A contact list is indispensable.

It would be weird and first, but I bet that thing is durable.

    Reminds me of the jitterbug.

I like the idea. Get a prepaid card with no or very long expiration time. Sharpie (your favorite auto service club)’s phone number onto some tape. Throw it in the glove compartment of your car or in a First Aid kit for emergencies.

Wait till some syndicate hear about this deal! Nice going dumb and dumber ;)

well, there’s a huge market for one-off phone calls (i.e. call and ditch) that oughta remain erm, anonymous, so why not ?

@ Mr. Javo: “This is nice but if you buy it, you need to carry with you all the numbers of your contacts…”

…Or, you could be like any person circa 2002 and remember phone numbers. It’s not hard. You should try it.

I remember when these kind of phones came out in Japan in about 2005 (when I was living there) for the elderly there that didn’t want all the gizmos and flashing parts on all those insane Japanese phones.

Older people are sometimes afraid of new technology. This phone aims to cash in on those technophobes.

Can you believe people used to have pen and paper address books? As if…

What’s funny is that this basically described ALL PHONES ON EARTH for about 100 years (up until 10 yrs ago). How spoiled Gen 2k is!

    @Memory Man

…Well I suppose it would be easy to remember phone numbers if one had very few friends. However, there are many people out there with more than 5 people in their contact list…

This phone is great for drug dealers. Cheap, so it’s disposable. No phone numbers for the cops to trace if you are busted. And you don’t need an address book if you only RECEIVE CALLS.

I wonder if it has a way of assigning keys to stored phone numbers like speed dial?

  20. on 05 Aug 2008 at 3:36 amDominic

surely beats even the landline pones - which now come with caller-id/clock.

Where is the link to get this phone?

  28. on 08 Jan 2009 at 11:05 pmDoug

Unfortunately, nowhere Jane. The company that made this phone and many others doesn’t seem to actually sell them anywhere. I’m not sure about the reason for it. Also, the company has failed to pay the web developer his fee for building their site so I can’t see anything good coming from them at all.

Could be a good one for visually challenged folks. Only if the keypad is with numbers protruded or in braille. Whatever works… but cute little thingy, anyway…..
